About This Website

BackCareCanada.ca has been designed for people experiencing a new or recurrent episode of low back and/or leg pain. The goal is to help them better manage their symptoms and to make more informed decisions about seeking treatment. (Please read our Disclaimer.)

Decisions about the website content were made following a number of focus groups with people who had recently experienced back and leg symptoms. They described what kind of information and advice they were looking for—both in terms of the non-surgical management of back and leg symptoms and the  options for back surgery.

The content was further developed by a group of Canadian back pain experts which included family physicians, physiotherapists, chiropractors and surgeons. The website was written in plain language by an experienced medical journalist and consultant.

During a testing phase, the website content was shared with patients, family physicians, physiotherapists and chiropractors who responded via a formal evaluation questionnaire. The content was further refined to reflect the needs and preferences of patients.

BackCareCanada.ca is hosted and managed by the Canadian Spine Society, an organization representing health care professionals, specifically surgeons, who are interested in spine care.
